How It Can Happen

Approaching victim on the pretext of striking up a conversation or seeking assistace.

Snatching the handbag from behind the victim.

Soiling victim’s clothing and offering to clean dirt stains on it.

Telling victim that his money has dropped on the floor.

Preventive Measures

Avoid short cuts through dark or deserted areas.

Be wary of persons who follow or distract you.

Carry your handbag in front of you or clasp it firmly under your arm.

Never leave it unattended, especially in crowded places like shopping and hawker centres.

Always walk facing on-coming traffic if possible and hold the handbag on the side away from the motorists.

Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash.

Do not flaunt cash and valuables in public view.

Punishment

A person convicted of theft is liable to:

a jail term which may extend to 3 years; or
a fine; or both.

A person convicted of theft with assault or criminal force is liable to:

a jail term of not less than 1 year and not more than 7 years; and
caning.
