Tips on securing your computer

Use authentication features like passwords to restrict access to authorised persons only.

Change your password frequently. Do not reveal it in any way, for example, writing it down on your monitor or PC casing. Also, do not tell your password to anybody.

Ensure that nobody is overlooking from your shoulder when entering your password.

Do not leave your terminal unattended. Either ensure that the screen-saver, with the authentication password, is activated, or logout from the network completely, when not using the computer.

Do not save important and confidential files in the hard-disk, as computer hackers can gain access to them. Ensure that they are stored onto diskettes or a removable drive, which can be removed and kept under locks.

Always lock the hard-disk and the computer casing when not in use.

Always screen new or alien diskettes before using them, to prevent your computer system from any potential viruses.

Scan your hard-disk regularly to detect and remove viruses early, before any serious damage is done to your computer.
